Asus Waveface computing concept mockups go live at CES
Jan 11th

Just as it doesn’t want to limit itself in terms of software and mainstream mobile processors for mobile PCs, Asus doesn’t want to rely on the tried and tested netbook form factor forever either. This much is evidenced by the presence of Waveface computing concept mockups at the company’s booth in CES. Pictured above is just one mockup of a Waveface device that Asus is conceptualizing at the moment. As you can see, it’s more flexible than any netbook you and I have ever known, and definitely a lot more portable. Only problem I have with this is, where are they going to hide the battery? It’s probably still a long way until the Waveface comes into retail form, but when it does, I’m sure many will be waiting. In the meantime, Asus is giving us a sneak peek. Bphone, a Fujitsu Lifebook clone with a phone, is in the zone
Jan 1st
Okay, enough of the lame rhymes.
If you’re not familiar with the Lifebook, this was actually one of the precursors of the netbook and was an ultrasmall mobile PC with a touchscreen and a keyboard all in one tiny package.
That UMPC was no mobile phone but was able to connect via wireless. The Bphone though has aspirations of replacing your cellphone with its phone features bundled in a not-so-handy netbook package. I’m wondering how would you answer calls with this without a headset, place the screen by your face? That would be like talking on your Kindle.
The unit has a 5″ display swivel touchscreen, keyboard with a trackball built-in and a few ports for earphones, SD, USB, etc. It also has WiFi, video player and other netbook staples on top of a custom OS. Check out the videos on the links below.

Shenzhen HT560 UMPC to run Windows XP with Via’s C7 CPU
Dec 3rd

Like netbooks, there seems to be plenty of UMPCs and MIDs to go around these days. And big-name PC manufacturers aren’t the only ones who contribute. Take this new 5.6-inch UMPC called the Shenzen HT560. Judging by its short list of specs, one can’t be faulted for thinking of it as ancient.
It’s got a 1GHz Via C7 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 16GB SSD, two USB 2.0 ports, an on-board 1.3MP camera, and its screen has a resolution of 800×480. It comes with a slew of wireless connectivity options including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS which will make it come off as modern, but it uses an ancient OS by comparison–Windows XP.
This will probably be quite wallet-friendly considering what you’re going to get, but it doesn’t look like it’ll be easy to get one outside of China. To make matters worse, a minimum order of 10 is required for every purchase. Oh well.
