A closer look at the Lenovo Skylight
Jan 8th
Brad got a full low-down on one of highlight devices of CES, the Lenovo Skylight. He notes that while it plays local video well, it has some issues on Flash and streaming video. This especially becomes evident in higher quality ones and if the video is on fullscreen.
The interface is Mac-esque with Linux running a dock of apps at the bottom of the screen. Brad notes that when opening an app, it doesn’t launch in the usual way. It first pops up as a widget on the home screen where you can preview it. Clicking on the widget puts the app in front with a sidebar for two more widgets. There’s an option for regular desktop behavior as well if you don’t fancy the widgets. If you look at it from a smartphone standpoint though, the widgets make sense. You want to monitor stuff in the background such as feeds and mail while doing your other work.
Brad goes away impressed with the device though he notes that it is a closed OS so updates for apps like Firefox need to wait for Lenovo’s go ahead first. For more insights and video, read Brad’s full article. You can also go check out jkkmobile’s hands-on of the device.
