MSI to Launch the MSI Wind U120 and U115 at the CES 2009
Jan 5th

What a better time to announced their second generation MSI but during the first tech event of the year, right? So although MSI has already sent feelers as early as Decemeber regarding the MSI Wind U120, it is only now that the company put out an official announcement regarding it.
And while the specs we told you before about the MSI Wind U120 still holds true, including built-in 3G module, 1GB of RAM, 120GB of HDD, and Windows XP the said Wind netbook would also be WiMax-ready. But that’s just about what MSI wants us to know, until CES 2009 gets going. So, we should all watch out for the official specs, pricing and release date, although MSI promises to deliver this last December.
Relatedly, MSI also officially announced the new MSI Wind U115, its first hybrid-storage capable Wind netbook that we told you about just recently. The Wind U115 will also have a longer battery life of up to 12 hours at max. Thanks to its ECO power-saving technology since the netbook’s OS will be installed in the SSD which we all know greatly reduces boot time and provides for more efficient operation.

Acer and Asustek looking at booming netbook sales in 2009
Jan 5th
Acer and Asustek Computer have both found new confidence after seeing booming sales of their netbooks in the US during the year-end holiday season, and have set high sales targets for netbooks in 2009, according to market sources.
Having recorded sales of 500,000 Aspire one-series netbooks in the US in December, Acer expects sales to top 12-13 million units in 2009, the sources said.
8.9-inch Aspire one netbooks performed strongly in 2008 and the company expects the model to perform even better in 2009, said Scott Lin, president, Acer Taiwan.
Based on strong sales of the 10.2-inch Eee PC 1000HA and the 8.9-inch Eee PC 900HA during the final weeks of 2008, Asustek now targets to ship 7.1-7.3 million Eee PCs in 2009, added the market sources.

Freescale Challenges Intel, Wants to Bring Down Netbook Prices to Sub-$200
Jan 5th
If what it promises to finally bring down the price of netbooks to the sub-$200 point, then Intel may have something to worry about with Freescale’s alternative – i.MX515 processor featuring ARM Cortex-A8 technology that can be used by netbook manufacturers.
Offering to deliver eight hours of battery life for 8.9-inch netbooks, Freescale’s solution would also include software, components and resources to help OEM’s in developing and deploying highly affordable netbooks.
According to Freescale, a netbook reference design featuring its i.MX515 processor and a new power management IC is already available. The said netbook reference runs on Canonical’s Ubuntu OS, has the SGTL5000 ultra low-power audio codec and Adobe Flash Lite.
And of course, if OEM’s would take on Freescale’s processor in their next netbook offerings, price point will be at $200 max.
